Abstract: | Linear relationships obtained between intrinsic viscosities and Wallace plasticity data make it possible to express plasticity data in terms of number-average degrees of polymerisation and to use plasticity data in a quantitative fashion. The successful use of kinetic expressions that do not incorporate diffusion parameters lends support to the findings that, for early stages of thermal-oxidative degradation, diffusion effects are not of significance, particularly for air-saturated natural rubber samples. If initially, chain scission of natural rubber follows zero-order or pseudo-zero-order kinetics and becomes autocatalytic in due course, then, it is likely that the degradation plasticity data can be represented by typical first-order type of kinetic equations. However, deviations are bound to occur as chain scission of natural rubber can follow varying kinetic paths. |
