Abstract: The paper describes some important aspects on growth of horses and their nutritional needs and limitations with emphasis on the race and recreational horses. Detailed information on a range of parameters on normal growth and development from birth to approximately 2 years old are needed because of significant changes in bodily development between this period. Physical development is particularly important in the race horses such as the Thoroughbreds and trotters. Most of these horses show rapid growth as measured by changes in body weight and height at the withers particularly during the first 12 months of age before gradually decline as maturity is attained. The dilemma facing the horse breeders and owners is the studies which indicate that rapid rate of growth is related to many developmental skeletal abnormalities in young horses. There has been surprisingly little research attention paid to the pathological recognition of osteochondrosis in its very early stages. In nutritional aspects, the nutrient requirement standards for horses have often been shown to be unreliable and unacceptable by many researchers and horse owners. This is in contrast to the available knowledge of nutritional needs of other farm animals. Many aspects of nutritional needs particularly energy and minerals of horses are relatively unknown and clouded with controversy. As such much of the equine feeding practices world-wide is by and large an art than science
