Abstract: A study was carried out to observe whether some of the translocative herbicides commonly used in mature areas can be used in the first year of palm establishment and its effect on early palm vegetative growth. The use of 'no-drift' nozzle was also incorporated to see if spray drift can be minimized. A contact herbicide like Paracol caused frond scorching within one month of application whilst the bending, twisting and snapping effects of Roundup, Roundup + Ally, Spark, Starmix and Touchdown required a loger period of 6 - 8 rounds of spraying to show up. The amount of spray drift onto palm foliage was influenced by the type of nozzle as well as frequency of spray. While the use of a no-drift nozzle reduced spray drift, lengthening of spraying rounds to 45 days resulted in more encroachment of weeds into palm circles which necessitated a greater volume of herbicide solution sprayed. Frond damage could be minimized by combining the use of a no-drift nozzle and spraying round duration of 30 days
