Abstract: Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L) has received substantial attention due to its desirable fibre properties and its fast growthing characteristic. Realizing its potential for various end uses, a special project was initiated to turn kenaf into high quality printing grade paper. Locally grown kenaf of V36 variety was used throughout the study. The first phase of the project involved research and development where separate series of studies encompassing pulping, bleaching and papermaking has been successfully carried out to produce paper from kenaf at laboratory scale. Process optimization of each study was established in order to be used as a reference for subsequent pilot scale trials study. The second phase involving pilot scale trials on pulping, bleaching and papermaking were carried out on pilot facilities in India and United Kingdom. The inavailability of local pilot facilities has prompted the researches to consider carrying out pilot scale trials abroad. Evaluations on various potential centres around the globe were carried out and pilot facilities in India and United Kingdom were chosen for pulping and papermaking trials respectively. The bleached pulp produced in India was sent to United Kingdom for papermaking trials, then papermaking trials were successfully carried out using pilot scale paper machine in Manchester.
