Abstract: | The methanolic crude extracts (0.25 mg/ml) of ten antioxidant products available in the Malaysian market and 20 Malaysian medicinal plants were tested for free radical scavenging activity using the xanthine/xanthine oxidase superoxide scavenging assay. Among the tested products, three exhibited high superoxide scavenging activity (81.9 per cent, 75.8 per cent, 74.2 per cent), one exhibited moderate scavenging activity (62.8 per cent) while seven others had low or no activity (0-50 per cent). Among the medicinal plants tested, eight species exhibited high superoxide scavenging activity (89.2 per cent - 100.0 per cent), four exhibited moderate scavenging activity (53.8 per cent - 69.7 per cent) and eight others had low activity (less than 50 per cent). The antioxidant products that possessed superoxide scavenging activity were found to have high dosages of vitamin A (1500 mg/tablet), vitamin C (500 mg/tablet) and selenium (250 mg/ml). It was also found that some of the Malaysian medicinal plants had similar to or higher superoxide scavenging activity than these antioxidant products at the tested concentration. |
